The New Leadership Work: Practicing the Kind of Leadership People Deserve | Shomari M. Jones

Something is shifting inside the modern workplace. You can feel it in boardrooms. You can hear it in quiet hallway conversations. You can see it in the growing number of talented people who are walking away from organizations that once assumed they would stay.

Across industries, leaders are asking the same question: Why does it feel harder than ever to keep people engaged, committed, and inspired to do their best work?

The answer is not complicated. But it is uncomfortable.

Doing equity work while Black in a culturally white district

Feature article in KAPPAN written by Shomari Jones and Dr. Paul Sutton.

Abstract: As an increasing number of schools and districts reckon with myriad systemic inequities, many turn to district educators of color to lead equity-focused transformation. Using the experiences of one of the authors, we surface the physical, emotional, and psychological trauma that comes from directing equity-focused transformation as a leader of color in a culturally White public school district. We conclude our manuscript by urging White district leaders to reassess how they support their leaders of color and rededicate themselves to sharing the emotional, psychological, and physical burden that comes with school district equity-focused transformation.
